Lagos State Government & SANDECO Organize A Symposium Titled ‘Emergency Systems & The Economy’

The SANDECO Group had the honour and privilege of welcoming His Excellency, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, who represented His Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, and members of the Lagos State Executive Council alongside other senior members of the Lagos State Government to our Symposium titled “Emergency Systems and The Economy: Impacts and Opportunities”, co-organized by the Ministry of Special Duties & Inter Governmental Relations on behalf of the Lagos State Government.

The Symposium which held at the Marriot Hotel Lagos on October 25th, 2022 was well attended by stakeholders within the public and private sectors. Also, in attendance were national figures, high profile traditional rulers, established keynote speakers as well as local and international emergency response officials, who all contributed to making the event colourful and insightful by delving into a wide array of perspectives of the topic of the day as it affects stakeholders at different ends of the emergency response and safety spectrum.

It was an opportunity for the Ministry of Special Duties and Inter Governmental Relations headed by its outgoing Honourable Commissioner, Engr. Tayo Bamgbose-Martins and the incoming Special Adviser, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende to showcase the ministry’s achievements in building the capacity of emergency response infrastructure across Lagos State and also present their score card. The major agencies under the ministry; the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Lagos Safety Commission were ably represented by their respective administrative heads who all presented their roles and responsibilities, contributions and successes towards a safer and ultimately greater Lagos.

Our Group Chairman / CEO, Mr. Vincent Southey Effiong while giving his goodwill message thanked all invited guests for taking out time from their busy schedules to attend the symposium, while noting the impacts and opportunities available to stakeholders and to the economy of Lagos State and the nation at large in terms of higher earnings, when effective emergency system policies are put in place by the government of the day. He identified the effects of desirable foreign investment, migration of skilled professionals and the growth of small and medium size enterprises as some of the social, environmental and economic benefits to Lagosians, when the right emergency systems infrastructure is delivered to the people.

The panelists at the event spoke passionately on how the different aspects of emergency systems and management directly and indirectly impact the citizens, their environment and the economy as a whole. The discussions covered disaster risk management, risk awareness, training, commerce as well as insurance, with each speaker reiterating their conviction on how these topics would lead to a safer and much greater Lagos.

In his presentation, the Deputy Governor reaffirmed the commitment of the Lagos State Government towards expanding the current capacity of all emergency response agencies across the state, promising to do even more towards safeguarding the lives and property of residents of the state. He also called on stakeholders to actively participate in the quest for more credible emergency systems implementation by establishing safety protocols, creating awareness on emergency numbers as well as other desirable actions to compliment the efforts of emergency response agencies.

The event ended with a tour of the various exhibition booths by the Deputy Governor, who visited our booth and was received by our Group Chairman / CEO and our Group Managing Director, Mrs. Chidinma Southey-Effiong, where we discussed an overview of what we do at the SANDECO Group while sharing our short and long term strategic goals designed to strengthen the economy of Lagos State and position it as Nigeria’s gateway to the world.
